Kannur-Cradled in the lap of nature, right in the middle of God's own country

Kannur is a picturesque city located in the southern state of Kerala, one of its northernmost districts. Earlierit was known as ‘Cannanore’ and some believe that its name actually refers to as the place of Lord Krishna as ‘Kannan’.It was a port town during the British regime and a hub of exports. Because of its richhistoric heritage and many myths surrounding it, it is also known as the ‘crown of Kerala’. Kannur is a must-visit for there are many tourist destinations it has to offer including serene and lovely beaches, forts, monuments, churches,temples, museums and more. Below is a list of some places in Kannur that should be on any traveller’s must-see list.

Places to visit in kannur:

Muzhappilangad Beach:
it is famous for being Kerala's only drive in beach. At about 7km from Thalassery in Kannur, you have 4 km of sand that awaits you to simply drive along as you soak in the view of the beautiful Malabar Coast. Along the way, one gets to munch on delicacies from a number of shacks that offer authentic Malabar cuisine. It is often considered a swimmers paradise as the black rocks protect the beach from deep currents. This is a perfect way to relax and soak in this clean and well maintained beach. One can also partake in adventure sports like paragliding, parasailing and micro light flights along with water sports, power boating or a simple catamaran ride.

 

Payyambalam Beach:
The Payyambalam Beach is a well maintained establishment in Kannur. This secluded location is known for providing one with the opportunity to simply relax or enjoy a family picnic at a quiet destination. Surfing and swimming options are also available.
 

Palakkayam Thattu:
Palakkayam Thattu' also welcomes its visitors with its beauty and pleasant climate along with the  exquisite range of flora and fauna. The DTPC also set up solar lights,sittingarrangement and walkway and a tourism circuit connecting the place with Paithalmala and Kanjirakolly to enhance the beauty of the place.

Paithalmala: 
Vaithalmala or Paithalmala is a hill station in the Kannur district of Kerala in India. Located near Pottenplave village, at a height of 1372 m above sea level, this is the highest geographic peak in Kannur..It is Nestled in the Kerala Karnataka border near to Kodagu forests,it lies in the Western Ghats. It has become a favourite spot for the nature enthusiasts,photographers, trekkers and leisurely visitors.
  
Madayipara:
Madayipara,a laterite hill, located at Pazhayangadi in Kannur District, which would soon get its due share of attention as a center of tourist attraction.Madayipara or Madayi para is a place worth visiting, especially for those who would like to walk and explore things own their own.

 Peralassery Sri Subrahmanya :
TempleThe Peralassery Sri Subrahmanya Temple is located around 16 kms south of Kannur city on the Kannur-Kuthuparamba road. Considered as an ancient temple, it is popularly believed that this place of worship was built by Lord Rama himself. The presiding deity of the temple is the serpent form of Lord Subrahmanya and so when inside the temple, one can view many idols of the King Cobra. This majestic snake is considered holy and eggs are the main offering.

Arrakkal Museum :
The Arrakkal Museum is a museum dedicated to the Arakkal family, the only Muslim royal family in Kerala, India. The museum is actually a section of the Arakkalkettu (Arakkal Royal Palace).The durbar hall section of the palace has been converted into a museum by the Government of Kerala.

Aralam wildlife sanctuary:
Spread over a 55 sq km area of forests on the Western Ghats, the Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary is among the finest of its kind in Kerala.One can catch sight of herds of elephants, gaur, sambar, spotted deer, barking deer, Nilgiri Langur, Hanuman Langur and the Malabar Giant Squirrel.It is also famous for the vast amount of butterfly species found here. Most of these are endemic to the Western Ghats.The forest is peaceful and many trekking options are available as well.

Kerala Folklore Academy:
Kerala Folklore Academy, an independent center for cultural affairs, was established by the Govt. of Kerala on 28 june 1995.The main objectives of the Academy are to promote and project the traditional art forms of kerala.Folklore Academy, is located in Chirakkal,Kannur District, Kerala. The institution was constituted by the Government of Kerala and works under the Cultural Affairs Department, Government of Kerala. Thalassery Sea Bridge:
Thalassery Pier locally known as Kadalpalam is located in Thalassery, Kannur District of Kerala state, south India. It is an old pier extending out into the Arabian Sea. It is frequented by people taking evening walks. This "Kadal

Dharmadam Island:
Dharmadam Island (Green Island)(കാക്ക തുരുത്ത്) was a small 2 hectare private island in Thalassery, Kannur District, Kerala. It lies 100 metres from the mainland at Dharmadam. This island, covered with coconut palms and dense bush is a beautiful sight from the Muzhappilangad beach. During low tide, one can walk out to it from the beach. Cliff Walkway:
The Sea View Park has a cliff walkway that runs by the sea. There are seats to sit and watch the sea and the spectacular sunsets. At one end is a children's park. A small fee is levied for entry to the Sea View Park.

 Parassinikadavu Muthappan Temple:
which lies on the banks of the Valapatnam River, attracts people from all sections of the society; irrespective of religion or caste. It promotes the essence of "Vasudaiva Kutumbakam - The whole world is one family." It is one of the most sacred pilgrim sites in north Kerala. The temple provides free meals and accommodation to all visitors. The devotees are given boiled black beans and tea as Prasadam (devotional offering).

St. Angelo Fort:
 Built by the the first Portuguese Viceroy in India, Don Francesco de Almeida (1505), St. Angelo’s Fort is among the most historic sites in Kannur. This massive triangular laterite structure is flanked by gigantic bastions that make for an imposing sight. It changed hands between the Dutch and eventually the British, who would remodel and reequip it into their primary military stronghold in Malabar.Mopilla Bay and Dharamadam Island are among the primary attractions here. Mopilla Bay is a natural harbour and the fort offers a wonderful view of it along with a sea wall projecting from the fort separating the rough sea and inland water. Dharamadam Island, barely 5 acres in area, is 100 m from the mainland and a favorite haunt of tourists. People come to the fort for relaxing strolls and just a brilliant view of the Arabian Sea.
